Abstract

Six works by Professor Sanglim Han of the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Arts and Sciences, Chung-Ang University, have been selected for the “Signatures” section, a key exhibition program of VIDEOFORMES 2025, held in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

VIDEOFORMES, founded in 1984, is an international festival of video and digital art. It showcases installation art, video art, performance, and interdisciplinary works annually, exploring the intersection of digital technology and art. Since its first edition in 1986, the festival has introduced works by world-renowned media artists such as Nam June Paik and Bill Viola, establishing itself as a leading platform for experimentation and innovation in digital art.

Works and Descriptions:

1. Crumbs of Something Like Love
Sanglim Han creates a virtual world where materiality implemented through algorithms and digitalized nature coexist based on game engines and VR. As an artist, she acts as the creator of a world generated through sophisticated computer calculations and as a collaborator with a computing system that builds 3D simulations and physics engines, producing physical properties impossible in reality. The entities of this virtual ecosystem exist in 3D spaces and forms coded with language and execution, transcending the physical laws of reality. The artist becomes a ‘game player,’ exploring the landscape and capturing aesthetic moments where unpredictable narratives unfold.

2. Aeroam Garden
Aerial Garden is a manufactured landscape resembling reality. Covered in scattered light, an island with a transparent, glassy texture floats in an unknown world. Traces reminiscent of the human body are found across the island, and the land is covered with flowers with smooth, plastic-like surfaces. This digital ecosystem exists in coded language and practice as a three-dimensional space and form that transcends the physical laws of reality. This dreamy virtual landscape visually reveals the technical traces of 3D graphics, unraveling the tight knit between reality and artificiality. The work invites the audience into a paradoxical yet beautiful fantasy, offering a moment of reflection at the intersection of authenticity and materiality of existence.

3. Entangled Emotions Solid Stickness
Looking closely at the body reveals it as another ecosystem where different species are intertwined. Han is fascinated by the fact that 90% of the human body consists of microorganisms rather than human cells. This ecosystem of fragmented entities is constantly changing. Tiny pieces that make up the body are sometimes part of it, and sometimes leave and float elsewhere. This raises the question: where does the body begin and end?

4. Hold Me While I Am Crushed
This work archives a virtual space ecosystem where two digital bodies exist, entangled and embracing each other. Through ‘test fall’ in the created universe, it explores the gaze between the elaborately constructed virtual and the reality that continues endlessly.

5. Trial Plunge
As soon as the artist “zooms in” on the screen, they become the creator of the virtual world, able to reproduce and manipulate everything. Two perfectly proportioned human bodies are modeled using 3D software, with shapes designed for resistance to deformation and surfaces designed for elasticity. The digitized body transcends real anatomy, existing not in bones, muscles, brain, or neurons, but in coded language and execution. The world, created from points, lines, and planes, extends beyond the realm of “nature,” turning unfinished reality into finished virtuality.

6. Verisimilaremotions
A recent work created using 3D simulation and AI.
